Alex Turco Art Show / Alexander McQueen Tribute

2 lovely comments
Ahh, I had a fabulous night last night! Some of the models from THE Artist Agency (where I'm interning) were modeling some of Alexander McQueen's last pieces at an Alex Turco art show at the beautiful W Hotel. Here's a picture I snapped of the lobby:

Unfortunately I had class until 8 so I wasn't able to get there until 8:45, just in time to see the last outfits. However, Heather (THE's PR director) took me into the changing room to show me what was there. I got to see McQueen's trademark skulls on rings, bracelets, and pumps; moth patterns on luxurious, long dresses; intricately patterned lace tights; and structured wing-like tops. Fantastic!! Also, Alex Turco's fashion paintings had everything I love in art: lots of texture, visible brushwork and drips, tastefully done metallic paint, and of course, Marilyn Monroe. And last but not least, the people there were so much fun and, as to be expected, incredibly stylish. By the time I got there, it had cleared out some, but the best dressed had stayed. So I decided to give a go to my first time doing "street style." Take a look:

Aureta Thomollari, the most fashionable blogger I've seen, wearing an Yves Saint Laurent dress, Victor Costa Vest, Gucci python shoes, and 1920s jewelry. Check out her blog, it's incredible and inspiring! Behind her is one of Alex's paintings (my favorite one).

Ogo Offodile, the extremely talented stylist behind Poodle Pusher.

Quincy Jones, saucy blogger, and Ky'Leigh T. Wilson, abstract artist.
What Quincy is wearing: shorts and cardigan by Rugby, shoes by Donald Pligner, belt and accessories by Hermes, Vetiver by Creed (JFK's favorite scent and Quincy's signature).

From left to right:
Ashley Mason-Greene
Paul Wharton, a style expert who has worked for Elle, MTV, VH1, etc. etc. and currently blogs for The CW's TrenDC.
Erika Paola Gutierrez, Junior Account Exec for Fingerprint Communications, in Diane von Furstenberg, and whose boots were to die for.
Alex Turco, the artist himself, looking fantastic in RING jeans, a Tom Ford jacket, Dolce & Gabbana shoes, and a Dsquared2 shirt.

Scott Burkhard, my wonderful friend who went with me, wearing J. Crew jeans and dress shirt, Johnston Murphy shoes, H&M blazer and Express tie.

And finally, me, wearing my Ermenegildo Zegna glasses, Urban Outfitters feather hair clip, H&M jacket, Cindy Lee dress, and Deena & Ozzy heels.

Hope you enjoyed a glimpse of my night!!

Hot and Bold Shoulder

0 lovely comments
Embellished and bold shoulders can be hard to wear, especially when you're trying to make it work outside of the club, so I've gathered some tops and dresses that are a little more understated than most styles with a chip on their shoulder. Oh, and they're all on the cheaper side, priced under $70.

Tops:

The loose construction and leopard print deformalizes the shoulders, making them less of a statement on their own.
$48 from Silence and Noise from Urban Outfitters

The grommeting is fairly toned down and becomes less harsh with the neutral gray and blush pink also offered.
$68 by Eight Sixty from Nordstrom

A loose tee makes embellished shoulders work for every day.
$39.50 from Express
(There's a similar look by Romeo & Juliet Couture for $59 on Bluefly.)

This monochromatic tee would look great with jeans or black leggings for a casual look.
$20.30 from Arden B

The crop, stone gray color, and rolled sleeves give this top a cool, laid-back feel.
$40 from Topshop

The wide, bold roses give the voluminous shoulders ground to stand on, making them feel less out of place.
$15.80 from Forever 21

The plain white cotton and charming bow help tone down the exaggerated shoulders and make this top more work-appropriate.
$47.86 from ASOS

Dresses:

The lace gives a more romantic feel to the usually harsh bold shoulder statement.
$19.80 from Forever 21

Plain black, long sleeves, and a simply tucked waistline give this dress symmetry against the studded shoulders.
$68 by Silence Noise from Urban Outfitters

Delicate roses and a creamy yellow make this dress fit into a timeless garden more than a modern spaceship.
$68 from Topshop

Floral lace transforms this dress from clubby to classy.
$64.96 from ASOS Petite
(An almost exact copy of this dress is available on Forever 21 for $41 cheaper!)

Metallic "feathers" give the same feel as metal detailing but aren't as austere.
$68.38 by Rare from ASOS

and just for fun, here's dress that's definitely harder to pull off (and is more expensive than the others) but successfully achieves the futuristic, bold shoulder look.

$76.92 from ASOS

Diesel's new Be Stupid ads... are stupid.

0 lovely comments
Am I the only one bothered by Diesel's "Be Stupid" ad campaign?? I realize these aren't brand new but I just now starting to see them and they make me feel stupid for not understanding the reason behind them.

Okay, I get the whole point about making brave fashion choices, not sticking to the norm, blah blah... but really? Asking people to not use their brains and therefore buy your clothes? Sorry, Diesel, but that's not making any sense. I'd much rather Be Smart than get eaten by a lion while taking pictures of my new bikini wax. HOWEVER, look at me, talking about the campaign right now. That's effective.
